7 Signs It's Time to Remove a Tree in Athens, GA

Removing a mature tree is always a last resort. But sometimes it's the safest and smartest choice — especially in Athens, where summer storms and our heavy red clay soil can turn a stressed tree into a real hazard fast. Here are the seven warning signs our certified arborists watch for when evaluating Athens trees.

1. Large dead branches in the upper canopy

Dead wood in the top third of the canopy is one of the most reliable signs of advanced decline. A few dead twigs are normal, but when you see branches several inches in diameter that have lost all their leaves while the rest of the tree is fully leafed out, the tree is in trouble. In Athens, this is especially common in mature water oaks past about 80 years old.

2. Mushrooms or conks at the root flare

If you see large shelf-like fungi growing on the trunk or at the soil line, the tree likely has internal decay. Common Athens culprits include Ganoderma, Inonotus and Armillaria. By the time fungi are visible externally, decay is usually well advanced inside the wood.

3. Hollow or cracked trunk

You can often hear hollowness by tapping the trunk with a mallet. Vertical cracks running up the trunk are even more concerning — they indicate the tree is failing structurally. Both warrant immediate professional assessment.

4. Sudden lean

Trees that have always leaned slightly are usually fine. But a tree that develops a NEW lean after a storm or heavy rain has likely had root failure. Look for soil heaving on the opposite side of the lean — that's a strong signal of imminent failure.

5. Major root damage

Construction within the root zone (roughly the area under the canopy drip line) frequently kills trees over a 2–5 year period. If you've had driveway work, foundation work, trenching for utilities, or significant grading near a tree, it's worth an assessment.

6. Insect infestations you can't control

Pine bark beetles can kill a healthy loblolly pine in Athens within weeks. Emerald ash borers devastate ash trees. By the time you see widespread tunneling or rapid needle browning, the tree is almost always too far gone to save.

7. The tree is in the wrong place

Sometimes a perfectly healthy tree just needs to come down — too close to a foundation, blocking solar panels, dropping fruit on a pool, or interfering with planned construction. There's no shame in removing a tree that doesn't fit your property.

What to do if you see these signs

Call a certified arborist for a free assessment. Some of these issues can be addressed without removal — cabling for splits, root collar excavation for buried flares, targeted pruning for dead limbs. But when removal really is the answer, sooner is always safer (and cheaper) than later. Athens Elite Tree Service provides free written estimates anywhere in Athens-Clarke County.
