Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which Is Right for You?

Once a tree is down, you're left with a stump. You have two options: grinding (chipping it below grade) or full removal (excavating the whole root ball). Here's how to decide which is right for your Athens property.

What is stump grinding?

A stump grinder uses a high-speed rotating wheel with carbide teeth to chip the stump down into wood mulch. Standard grinding goes 6 inches below grade — enough for grass to grow over. Deeper grinding (12+ inches) is available when you need to replant or build on top. The roots underground are left to decompose naturally over several years.

What is full stump removal?

Full removal uses an excavator or backhoe to dig out the entire stump and major root system. This leaves a large hole that has to be backfilled. It's significantly more invasive — your lawn will be torn up, irrigation lines may be hit, and adjacent root systems can be damaged.

When grinding is the right choice

For 95% of residential Athens jobs, grinding is the better option. It's faster (under an hour vs. half a day), cheaper ($100–$400 vs. $500–$1,500+), less invasive (no lawn damage), and produces useful mulch as a byproduct. If you're putting in a new lawn, flower bed, or even replanting a tree, grinding is enough.

When full removal makes sense

Full removal is only necessary when: you're putting in a deep foundation, a swimming pool, or doing major regrading; the stump is in the way of a planned utility trench at depth; or the species has aggressive resprouting roots that grinding alone won't stop (rare in Athens). Most homeowners never need this.

What to do with the wood chips

Grinding produces a generous pile of wood chips. Great uses: mulch for ornamental beds (avoid using fresh wood chips around vegetable gardens — they tie up nitrogen), filling in low spots, composting (great brown material), or we can haul them away for an additional fee.
