The Most Common Trees in Athens, GA (and How to Care for Them)

Athens has one of the most beautiful urban canopies in the Southeast. Here are the trees you're most likely to find on your Athens property — and what each one needs to stay healthy.

Southern Live Oak

The iconic Athens tree, especially along Milledge Avenue and throughout the historic districts. Live oaks can live 200+ years and reach massive spreads. They're tough, drought-tolerant, and beautiful. Main care needs: structural pruning every 5–7 years on mature trees, watching for girdling roots, and avoiding root zone construction.

Water Oak

Very common in older Athens neighborhoods. Fast-growing but with shorter lifespans (often only 60–80 years). Past about age 70, water oaks often start declining and dropping large branches. Regular inspections by a certified arborist become critical as they age.

Loblolly Pine

The dominant pine across Athens and most of north Georgia. Fast-growing and tall — often 80+ feet. Main threats: pine bark beetles (especially after drought stress), root rot in poorly drained soils, and lightning strikes. Mature pines near homes should be inspected regularly for hazard signs.

Pecan

A classic Southern yard tree found throughout Athens. Pecans need significant space — don't plant them within 60 feet of a house. They're prone to large limb failures, especially in old trees. Annual cleanup pruning extends their lifespan considerably.

Crepe Myrtle

Beloved for summer flowers across Athens. Easy to care for IF you don't 'crepe murder' them by topping. Light shaping in late winter is all they need. Old wood and crossing branches can be removed; the main trunks should be left alone to develop the beautiful exfoliating bark.

Eastern Red Cedar

A tough native conifer found throughout the Athens area. Very low maintenance. Watch for cedar-apple rust if you have apple trees nearby.

Sweetgum

Common in Athens, often as a 'volunteer' tree. Beautiful fall color but those spiky gumballs are a nuisance. Many homeowners have these removed; if you keep one, regular cleanup pruning helps.
